We are spending the week kayaking the waters around Charleston, South Carolina. Pictured above, touring the ACE Basin we wind our way through narrow man-made channels that were dug to irrigate the rice fields that dominated the area in the 1800’s. ACE is an acronym for the three rivers that feed the area, the Ashepoo, the Combahee and the Edisto.
“…the ACE Basin, one of the largest, most pristine and most viable estuarine ecosystems in North America…Seemingly frozen in time, these virtually unspoiled wetlands are the focus of a preservation effort of such magnitude that countries around the globe are watching to see how well the venture will endure against urban pressure.” From South Carolina’s Wetland Wilderness by Tom Blagden, Jr.
