Three of us from the fly shop spent the day Wednesday running the western edge of “Steelhead Alley.” We knew that conditions were less than ideal, but we all just needed to get on the water. The four inches of snow that morning did add to the scenery.
The fishing conditions lived up to our expectations. The water we found that was not iced over was high, off-color and often had floating ice. Patrick found us some open water and we did get into a couple of fish. Tyler (pictured) caught this nice male on the Rocky.
I hooked into a good one that went deep and ran upstream. He only ran a few yards and then just sat on the bottom and shook his head, eventually throwing the hook. I need to work on my hook-set.
We didn’t fish long. The temperature dipped to 20 degrees and our hands were numb. When we got out of the water and de-rigged our boots froze. Spring, and the spring run is coming.
