Fishing The Arkansas

Filed under: General, Stream Reports — Tall Man @ 7:30 pm

Arkansas River Above Salida, Colorado The weather in the upper Arkansas valley is still wintery. This morning in Buena Vista we had a couple of inches of snow on the deck. Over the weekend more water was released from the Twin Lakes which put the river high and off-color. In addition, muddy flows at the Stockyards made for poor conditions below Salida.

Sunday I floated from Big Bend to Salida. We were pelted with wet snow much of the time and my hands and feet were stiff by the end of the trip. The fishing was slow but we did manage to move a few fish and it was great to be back on the river.

By mid-day Monday the sun had come out and the river above Salida was starting to look better. Monday afternoon I toured the public river access areas north of Salida. The picture to the right is from a bridge below Big Bend along the State leased fishing easement.
